About Me

My name is Jamie Barrett and I run Creative Pruning and Hedge Trimming, based in Rowledge, Farnham, Surrey.

From early childhood, nature and creativity have always been my main passions. I trained as an artist and sculptor and it is that background which shapes the way I approach my creative pruning projects.

I particularly enjoy the artistry of and . Niwaki is the Japanese art of sculpting trees into abstract, cloud-like forms through meticulous, asymmetrical pruning. Topiary is the art of sculpting trees and shrubs into geometric or whimsical shapes to bring architectural elegance to a garden.

I'm also an expert at more traditional . I can take on the cutting of hedges of all sizes, working to the right timing for each species to protect flowering, fruiting, and overall health. My work ranges from maintaining neat, straight-edged boundary hedges to creating more elaborate designs. All shaping and maintenance of hedges is undertaken with utmost care and attention to detail.

The specialised annual pruning of fruit trees, to guide their forms and maximise yields, is another area in which I am highly practised. I also offer all other forms of , trimming, and training.

My mission is to help make unique outdoor spaces by blending horticulture with creativity. Treating nature as a living canvas, to evoke emotion and develop harmonious, aesthetically pleasing environments.

Shaped Over Seasons, Refined By Hand

Creative pruning is not a one-off cut. Many forms are developed patiently over seasons, refined by hand, and maintained so the shape matures naturally with the plant.

    Looking at how it already grows and where its natural structure wants to go, before a single cut is made.

    Shape the first structure

    Establishing the framework the final form will be built around. Often the most important and most delicate stage.

    Refine by hand

    Clipping slowly to bring out the detail in the form, working with the plant rather than rushing the line.

    Maintain the form over time

    Regular visits hold the shape as the plant keeps growing, so the form keeps its character year after year.

Pleached tree trimming

Specialised trimming and framework maintenance for pleached trees. I expertly trim mature and young stilt hedges, including hornbeam, lime, birch, and beech, among others, to preserve their architectural, uniform geometric shape and clear overhead structure with true artisan precision.
